A Stone A Day Keeps The Devil Away

This morning as I was writing in my stone journal about encouraging a lady in Ross the Lord dropped a phrase in my mind “a stone a day keeps the Devil away.” This particular lady was quite lovely and I complemented her on how lovely she was. She turned to me and said you don’t really know how much I needed that today. Well after we hugged I told her that in truth I needed to bless someone today as much as she needed a blessing. It was a Jesus moment for both of us. Now back to a stone a day keeps the Devil away. About a month ago Jesus told me to make a stone journal recounting all the times He had intervened in my life to guide, protect, bless or otherwise been present. Joshua 4:6-7 directed the children of Israel to place stones in the Jordan River as a memorial to His faithfulness in their crossing the Jordan so in the future when their children asked about the stones they would share with them how God had lead and directed them. As I reflect on all the wonderful times He has intervened in my life and encouraged me to share Him with others I anticipate His next adventure. When I go into the marketplace with a heart turned to Jesus He is almost always faithful to provide an adventure worth recording in my stone journal.

I Thessalonians 1:25 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

A vivid childhood memory is one in which I am sitting on the front porch steps cherishing new paper and pencils in anticipation of the first day of school. Blank paper, fresh unsharpened pencils with erasers in pristine condition were treasures. The only trouble with this picture is the paper would be untouched or if touched, childish stick people would emerge. My heart desire was to put something lovely on the paper. A lovely flower bouquet or maybe a landscape might be drawn. This dream never came true as a child. As an adult I took a watercolor class and the only good thing the teacher could say about my painting was that the yellow was beautiful. Of course it was because it came straight off the palette. Drawing class was a bit more rewarding as I was able to copy a pencil drawing with a modicum degree of success. I will admit though at one point I submitted a greeting card to The Rubber Stamper magazine and it was published! Several years later I realized after writing numerous “Tidbits” that God had fulfilled my dream to create on paper a work of art, but with words. Word pictures to bring God’s truths so that someone might be encouraged by them.

When I look back and see the little girl sitting on the porch steps treasuring her pencils and paper I see God’s hand on her desire to create something beautiful on paper. Thank you Lord for the beauty of words. Words that can paint a picture to show the magnificence of Jesus.
